Designs:
First coin - Grizzly Bear

Designed by Canadian artist Caitlin Lindstrom-Milne, your coin features an upper-body portrait of a grizzly bear against a gold-plated background of Canada violets within a series of squares. A sockeye salmon swerves in front of the bear’s muzzle that is wide open in an attempt to catch the fish. A waterfall with distant mountains is engraved within the bear’s silhouette. Rocks protrude from the water and line the riverbank where evergreens grow. “CANADA 2019 50 DOLLARS” appears in the lower left quadrant of the design. Its engraving echoes the curved shape of a swimming salmon. On the obverse, the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt with “ELIZABETH II D.G. REGINA” engraved along the outer edge of the coin.

“The grizzly bear is fierce. It dominates the landscape. I wanted to balance all that power with a delicate flower that grows where the grizzly catches salmon. It was an interesting challenge to communicate this duality within the round shape of a coin.” Caitlin Lindstrom-Milne, Artist

Second coin - Arctic Fox

Designed by Canadian artist Jayson Fuerstenberg, your coin features an Arctic fox poised on a background of gold-plated snow. The fox’s compact ears and muzzle are clearly distinguishable in its ¾ profile. Its distinctive long tail warms its legs. An Arctic landscape is engraved within the fox’s silhouette. It features snow-covered tundra, mountains, and a North American brown lemming, the fox’s preferred prey. “CANADA 2019 20 DOLLARS” appears to the right of the fox’s back. Its engraving follows the contours of the drifting snow. On the obverse, the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt with “ELIZABETH II D.G. REGINA” engraved along the outer edge of the coin.

"My artistic style is 'magic realism.' It's anchored in reality, but I add mystery or fantastical elements to tell a story or reveal a deeper meaning. The Arctic fox was perfect for my first coin with the Mint. It's part of the landscape, like the snow and ice, as it travels great distances in search of lemmings, its primary food.” Jayson Fuerstenberg, Artist
