A GOLD MILESTONE! An extraordinary Canada 150 commemorative coin! Order today!

From the gold to the striking process, and even the symbolic design itself, our first gold coin was Canadian in every way. Its engraved rendering of Canada's coat of arms (as it appeared in 1912) is synonymous with a burgeoning nation, while its very being represents a distinguished milestone—one of the many that followed as the Ottawa branch of the Royal Mint evolved into today's Royal Canadian Mint.

As part of our yearlong celebration of Canada's 150th anniversary, the Royal Canadian Mint looks back on a gold piece that carries deep historic significance for us, and for Canada. The first Canadian gold coin is brought to life once more—this time, in one kilogram of 99.99% pure gold, and with a few present-day elements to remind us of how far we've come together.

A gorgeous addition to your coin display! Don't be disappointed, order today!

  • GST/HST EXEMPT! Your coin is GST/HST exempt.

Your coin features a near-faithful reproduction of W. H. J. Blackmore's design for the first Canadian gold coins, which were struck between 1912 and 1914. The image centres on the Canadian coat of arms, as it appeared before 1921: it is a quartered shield composed of the provincial arms of the Dominion of Canada (Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick). Adding to the majesty of the design, the shield is encircled by crossed maple boughs and includes the inscriptions "CANADA", "2017" and "2500 DOLLARS". The obverse features the official Canada 150 privy mark beneath the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.

Did you know…
  • This coin is crafted from 99.99% pure gold, but the original coins struck between 1912 and 1914 were composed of 10% copper and 90% gold. In 1912, the source for this gold was the Klondike region (Yukon), while the gold used for coins issued in 1913 and 1914 came from Ontario.
  • By August 1914, key changes to Canada's financial system had effectively suspended the gold standard, and in 1915, the Canadian gold coin program was cancelled.
  • Most of these coins struck between 1912 and 1914 became part of the Dominion Government's gold reserves until March 1935, when the newly formed Bank of Canada began amassing them in its vault. Many remained in the vault for over 75 years—or until 2012, when a select number were released to the Royal Canadian Mint and made available to collectors.
Your coin is encapsulated and presented in a Royal Canadian Mint-branded wood case with black beauty box.
