Design:

Designed by Canadian artist Steve Hepburn, your coin features a fireworks display on a January night, just above a side view of the colourfully lit Horseshoe Falls in Niagara Falls, Ontario. The image is framed by stylized icons that represent popular outdoor activities and sights in Canada: (clockwise from top) Niagara Falls Winter Lights; Christmas tree; rodeo; wine tasting; dogsledding; folk music; cherry blossom; maple syrup tasting; whale watching; tulips; coastal drive; and aurora borealis. The obverse features the year “2019” and face value “3 DOLLARS”, and the framed effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.

Did you know…
  • The lighting tradition began in 1925
The famous Falls are lit up every evening beginning at dusk—that’s typically 5 p.m. in January and after 8 p.m. in July. They are occasionally lit in custom colours to mark a special occasion or in support of a charitable cause.
  • The annual Winter Festival of Lights runs from November to end of January
Enjoy Canada’s foremost illumination festival in Niagara Falls and capture the magic of the holiday season! The annual Winter Festival of Lights celebrations transform Niagara Falls into a palette of breathtaking colour with millions of sparkling lights and animated displays located within Niagara Parks, Dufferin Islands and the surrounding tourism districts. Experience special displays and activations across the Parks and into the community, celebrating the rich natural and architectural beauty of Niagara at night!
  • Water moves fast, even in winter
During peak hours, more than 168,000 cubic metres of water per minute pour over the Falls at a speed of 109 kilometres per hour. The Horseshoe Falls don’t freeze over in winter—in fact, the waters only stopped flowing once, in March 1848, when an ice jam in the upper river temporarily stopped the flow of water. During particularly cold temperatures, the mist and spray begin to form a crust of ice over top of the rushing water, making it appear as though the Falls have in fact stopped. However, the water continues to flow underneath the sheets of ice.

Packaging:

Your coin is encapsulated and presented in a Royal Canadian Mint-branded maroon clamshell with a black beauty box.
