The reverse design by artist Nathalie Lagacé is a botanical work of art that captures the natural beauty of Canada's beloved maple leaf. It features four different sizes of sugar maple (Acer saccharum) leaves arranged on opposite sides along the twig and clusters of winged samaras or keys. The reverse includes the text "CANADA", the year "2020", the face value of "500 DOLLARS", the nominal metal weight "5 OZ" and the purity standard of "9999 AU". The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.

Did you know…
  • Of the 13 maple species that naturally grow in North America, 10 of them are found in Canada.
  • Seen on the coin's reverse, the sugar maple's double-winged fruit is known as samara. Its double wings allow the seed to remain airborne longer after it has fallen off the tree, so it can be sown farther away from the parent tree.
  • Other than the one on our national flag, the maple leaf isn't an official symbol of Canada, but the maple tree (Acer) has been our official arboreal emblem since 1996.
  • The sugar maple (Acer saccharum) isn't the only type of maple used to produce maple syrup, but the high sugar content of its sap makes it the industry's top choice. Canada produces 71% of the world's maple syrup.

Your coin is encapsulated and carefully enclosed in a Royal Canadian Mint-branded red wood lacquered case, which arrives protected by a black beauty box.
