The lighthouses of Atlantic Canada embody the history and spirit of our rocky eastern shores, where the landscape shifts from soaring cliffs to picture-perfect coves. The last stop on our Canadian Coastsjourney brings us to the Atlantic coast, where the sun rises first in Canada; on the square-shaped reverse, a selectively gold-plated arrangement of iconic images highlights Atlantic Canada’s rich maritime heritage, while emphasizing our enduring connection with the sea.

An ideal coin for someone who enjoys a beautiful take on the Atlantic. Order today!

Special features:
  • THIRD AND FINAL COIN IN A LIMITED 3-COIN SERIES! Your coin is the third and final in a series of three that explores the longest coastline in the world, and the three oceans that line Canada’s shores!
  • YOUR COIN IS A SQUARE! Canadian Coasts is a limited series of three square-shaped coins that are a combined tribute to the longest coastline in the world! Each square coin represents one of the oceans that line Canada’s shores: Pacific, Arctic, and Atlantic!
  • BIG ON DETAILS! At (27 mm), your engraved coin is incredibly detailed, as evidenced by the markings on the humpback whale!
  • AN INTRICATE TOUCH OF GOLD! Gold plating adds a rich hue to the rim and the iconic landmark of Atlantic Canada: a lighthouse on the rocky shore. Given the amount of minute details, this artistic touch is an extraordinary feat that required a high level of precision!
  • RICH IN SYMBOLISM, ANY WAY YOU LOOK AT IT! The highly symbolic images are arranged in a pattern that also resembles the points of a compass. The design is the same, even when you turn the coin!
  • INCLUDES SERIALIZED CERTIFICATE! The Royal Canadian Mint certifies all of its collector coins. Most of these are serialized certifications, meaning that each certificate is given a unique number, starting at 1.
  • 99.99% PURE SILVER! Your 99.99% pure silver coin is beautifully enhanced with an exquisite proof finish that accentuates every design element to maximum effect.

The sun rises over the East Coast in your coin by Maurade Baynton, where the craggy rocks symbolize the rugged coastline and its many sheltered coves. From its central position, the gold-plated sun casts a warm morning light that illuminates Canada’s oldest operational lighthouse, the Sambro Island Lighthouse, one of many such landmarks that embody the region’s history and spirit. An impressively sized marine mammal, the humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) symbolizes the diverse marine life found in the waters of the North Atlantic and the Gulf of St. Lawrence, where whale-watching has become a popular tourist attraction. Anchoring the corners of the design is the lobster (Homarus americanus), an icon of the Atlantic fishing culture and an economic powerhouse. Gold plating also highlights the rim that frames the reverse, to reinforce the idea that everything in nature is beautifully interconnected. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.

Did you know…
  • More than half of the world’s supply of lobster comes from Canada—in fact, it is one of our most valuable seafood exports. Some of the largest populations of this brown-coloured, nocturnal crustacean are found in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and off coast of Nova Scotia.
  • Between May and September, the waters off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador play an important role as part of the major feeding grounds for the Western North Atlantic population of humpback whales. Over 15 different species of cetaceans (whales, dolphins and porpoises) can be found in our eastern waters—a fact that makes Atlantic Canada a popular destination for whale watching.
  • Canada’s first lighthouse was completed in 1734 in Louisbourg, Nova Scotia, but it was damaged and re-built several times (the current lighthouse is the fourth incarnation). Our oldest surviving lighthouse is also the oldest working lighthouse in North America, and it is featured on the coin’s reverse: the Sambro Island Lighthouse, which was built in 1758 at the entrance to Halifax Harbour.

Your coin is encapsulated and presented in a Royal Canadian Mint-branded maroon clamshell with a black beauty box.
