The sun rises over the East Coast in your coin by Maurade Baynton, where the craggy rocks symbolize the rugged coastline and its many sheltered coves. From its central position, the gold-plated sun casts a warm morning light that illuminates Canada’s oldest operational lighthouse, the Sambro Island Lighthouse, one of many such landmarks that embody the region’s history and spirit. An impressively sized marine mammal, the humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) symbolizes the diverse marine life found in the waters of the North Atlantic and the Gulf of St. Lawrence, where whale-watching has become a popular tourist attraction. Anchoring the corners of the design is the lobster (Homarus americanus), an icon of the Atlantic fishing culture and an economic powerhouse. Gold plating also highlights the rim that frames the reverse, to reinforce the idea that everything in nature is beautifully interconnected. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.

Did you know…
  • More than half of the world’s supply of lobster comes from Canada—in fact, it is one of our most valuable seafood exports. Some of the largest populations of this brown-coloured, nocturnal crustacean are found in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and off coast of Nova Scotia.
  • Between May and September, the waters off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador play an important role as part of the major feeding grounds for the Western North Atlantic population of humpback whales. Over 15 different species of cetaceans (whales, dolphins and porpoises) can be found in our eastern waters—a fact that makes Atlantic Canada a popular destination for whale watching.
  • Canada’s first lighthouse was completed in 1734 in Louisbourg, Nova Scotia, but it was damaged and re-built several times (the current lighthouse is the fourth incarnation). Our oldest surviving lighthouse is also the oldest working lighthouse in North America, and it is featured on the coin’s reverse: the Sambro Island Lighthouse, which was built in 1758 at the entrance to Halifax Harbour.

Your coin is encapsulated and presented in a Royal Canadian Mint-branded maroon clamshell with a black beauty box.
