Various stories have been told over the centuries, and one of the most popular is the Kwakwaka’wakw legend of a man who ventured into the forest and came across a magical frog as large as a man. Copper shone from its mouth, and despite its ability to disappear, the frog allowed the man to vanquish it. With great effort, the man rolled the frog over and found a stack of copper shields underneath—a luxury reserved for the highest-ranking chiefs. He returned to his village and was lauded for his wealth and prestige.

Your 14-karat gold coin celebrates a Pacific Northwest iconic totem—the frog and its gift of wealth. Order today!

Special features:
  • CONTINUE THE SERIES! If you enjoyed Raven Brings the Light (available on Mint.ca, while supplies last), then continue the series with the next coin, the striking Frog Reveals a Gift 14-karat gold coin!
  • A BRILLIANTLY EXECUTED WORK OF ART! Your coin portrays one of the most iconic animals of the Pacific Northwest. In addition, your storytelling coin brings into the spotlight an intriguing form of wealth that’s unique to the region.
  • FORMLINE ART! An original work and a modern interpretation of the unique formline art that has defined First Nations Peoples of the Pacific Northwest since ancient times, and is becoming increasingly collectible today.
  • 14-KARAT GOLD! For dramatic contrast, your coin uses 14-karat gold and selective colour with intricate engraving for added depth and dimension and dynamic finishes to maximize shine and contrast.
  • LOWERED MINTAGE! Only 1,500 coins will be made worldwide for this coin, the second in the series.

Design:

Your coin was designed by Canadian K’ómoks and Kwakwa̱ka̱'wakw artist Andy Everson who created a uniquely graphic portrait of the frog using the ancient formline art style of the Pacific Northwest combined with contemporary elements and a modern design aesthetic. Green bold lines define the contours of the frog while elements of the shield are executed in copper. In the background, wavy lines convey the ethereal essence of the forest.

Packaging:

Your coin is encapsulated and presented in a Royal Canadian Mint-branded maroon clamshell with a black beauty box.

The perfect wedding gift...

5

We are gathered here today to celebrate the matrimonial vows of J and L, and it is our pleasure to commemorate the event with this gift of a Royal Canadian Mint gold coin. This gift has at least seven connections to today's event, and we are all aware that seven is considered a lucky and auspicious number in our Judeo-Christian culture. 1. The coin is legal Canadian tender, reminding the happy couple that they were legally married in Canada. 2. The coin was minted in 2018, which, in thirty-five years, will help J remember the year he was married. 3. The design on the reverse is by Andy Everson, a BC Indigenous artist, reminding the couple that they met and married in BC. 4. The design is titled "Frog Reveals A Gift", a metaphor for the gift of love each of our couple has revealed for the other, and the gift we are thrilled to present to the couple. 5. The frog is an amphibian, a group of animals which thrive in water, a characteristic that will remind our couple that they too have thrived in water: the relatively wet environment of rainy Vancouver, and were married on a day which started with a downpour but where the sun broke out later to join in the celebration of their union. 6. On the obverse is an image of Canada's female head of state, HRH Queen Elizabeth II, reminding us all that while J may be king, we all know who the true monarch is in this marriage. 7. Gold is immutable and everlasting, it does not tarnish or corrode -- it is the perfect metaphor for our couple's immutable and everlasting love for each other.

Great reverse for this format

I love the Everson design and this complements the Raven from last year. As Special Edition gold coins, these designs are much more consistent with what I expect from the RCM than the DC Comics & Warner Cartoon issues. The regular $100 highlights an event from Canadian History... with this series highlighting Canadian First Nation art, they work very well together.

It will sit in the center of my coin collection. It's representative of our local First Nations culture, another jewel to add to my legacy for my children and their children. Overall, I think it's loaded with significance for all Canadians.

How many are going to be in this set? So far it is raven and frog.

Biff

Hello and thank you for asking. We never know how many coins there will be in a series. Different factors will influence the numbers and we are informed a few days before a coin launches.
