South Africa’s 2011 Silver Rand pays homage to one of only two authors to win the prestigious Booker Prize twice, and the only one to also win the Nobel Prize in Literature: John Maxwell Coetzee.

J.M. Coetzee was born in South Africa in 1940. Coetzee’s first Booker Prize was awarded in 1984 for his Life & Times of Michael K. His image on this coin dates to that period. The coin also bears the summary of that book’s moral as it appears in the book’s last paragraph:

“He would lower the spoon down the shaft deep into the earth, and when he brought it up there would be water in the bowl of the spoon; and in that way, he would say, one can live.”
