Whether you’re waking up to views of the Canadian Rockies, nestled in a New Brunswick cabin, or peering off the balcony of your downtown condo, you’ll likely spot some of these well-known backyard birds.
Observing these curious and colourful creatures is a fun way to enjoy nature, while staying warm inside even on the coldest days. Have you watched them before and wondered which birds are which? This quick list will help you identify them and to ensure they keep coming back to your backyard, we’ve highlighted their favourite snacks!
Northern Cardinal
The bright red male northern cardinal is a striking contrast against the wintery white background. Though his better half is less colouful, the pair both sport a distinct crest and sing a lovely song to one another.
Snack: Very popular at most feeders, the northern cardinal is partial to classic sunflower seeds.
Blue Jay
Bullies at every backyard feeder, blue jays are some of the largest and most colourful visitors you’ll encounter. Their bright appearance is really a reflection though. When visible light hits their (truly brown) feathers, all colours pass through except for blue.
Snack: Much like the famous baseball song exclaims, Toronto’s MLB mascot wants you to buy them some peanuts, but save the crackerjacks for your next ballgame.
Black-capped Chickadee
A songbird you’ve likely tried to mimic, chickadee-dee-dees are considered the cutest and most curious of the feeder friends. They’re usually first to feast when seeds get replenished and are even bold enough to eat right out of your hands.
Snack: Any feeder seed mix will do. The chickadee isn’t picky when stocking up on snacks.
Red-breasted Nuthatch
Yank-yank! The nasally noise of the red-breasted nuthatch is one that always gets our attention. And seeing this bird bob down a tree accentuates its animated sound even more.
Snack: While the nuthatch will nibble on your usual feeder offerings, it does have a soft spot for suet.
Cedar Waxwing
Cedar waxwings love fruit. Usually not seen at seed feeders, these boisterous birds prefer the berries of nearby shrubs and evergreens. At certain times, cedar waxwings will gather by the hundreds to feed, filling the air with their high-pitched whistles.
Snack: Adding fruit, like orange or apple slices, or raisins, to your feeder can attract a variety of new species, including the cedar waxwing.
