The World in a City: Toronto
Toronto’s official Host City poster was created by Toronto-based illustrator Dave Murray. His vibrant design features geometric shapes in colours from the Toronto flag.
With thoughtful details woven into the design, the poster features Toronto’s iconic shoreline with a soccer ball atop the location of Toronto Stadium—where Canada’s Men’s National Team plays their first match. The squares and stripes represent the grid-like streets of the city, symbolizing Toronto’s many neighbourhoods and residents, while a player wearing a maple leaf jersey strikes strong front and centre. The artwork expertly expresses the atmosphere of the city: lively, dynamic, and diverse.
The Beautiful Game in a Beautiful Place: Vancouver
From an open call for submissions, Jamin Zuroski’s design was selected by a panel for the Vancouver Host City poster. His artwork pays homage to the city and the nature that surrounds it, all in colours representing the West Coast.
“The highlight of the First Nations form line was to really give honour and to acknowledge the ancestors of our past, and to thank them for all that they have done to allow us to be where we're at now. I tried to showcase the skyline in terms of: it took the community to develop the city, from all cultures,” says Zuroski, who is of mixed Ukrainian, Polish, and Namgis First Nation ancestry. “My intention for this design was to allow breathability for the eye and for it to move around, so you can enjoy each section at a time and take it in your own way.”
“I wanted the orca to be a focal point on this poster design. Orca pods travel and train together, just like the FIFATM/MC teams. Orcas also kick seals up into the sky, through play and other means, which reminds me of FIFATM/MC players performing captivating scissor kicks and bicycle kicks,” explains Zuroski. “It’s a spectacle to watch, on both fronts.”
