The Mint is hiring a 3D Artist Engraver who can thrive in a dynamic and inclusive environment.

Reporting to the Manager Engraving and Die Production, the 3D Artist Engraver will be responsible for the rendering and modeling of product, prepares artwork, designs, sculpts, polishes and hand-engraves tool steel to create coining tooling. Translating 2D drawings and concepts into 3D models and ensures that all master tools and models faithfully represent the approved artwork. Provides guidance and assists in the training of colleagues.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Skills and Abilities:

  • Assume responsibility for ensuring assigned work is produced to appropriate standard quality within the scheduled timeframe and deadlines.
  • Interpret 2D designs and translate them into 3D space while maintaining the original artistic intent.
  • Ensures that all models and tooling are faithful reproductions of the approved artwork.
  • Produce the highest quality work possible within a given amount of time.
  • Demonstrated artistic ability to compose and create coin designs and artboards.
  • Measures and examines, under magnification, tooling for defects.
  • Able to develop specialized engraving and sculpting tools.
  • Ability to provide a high degree of workmanship and accuracy.
  • Excellent hand-eye coordination and visual acuity.
  • Excellent attention to detail and the ability to abstract and interpret design down to its fundamentals.
  • Ability to interpret drawings and technical data.
  • Able to communicate well and interact with others.
  • Willing to share ideas and accept constructive feedback.

 

Knowledge :

  • Uses Photoshop to produce artwork and layouts for approval.
  • Ability to work in a safe and conscientious manner, work in accordance with the ISO policies and procedures and participate in continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Advanced fine motor skills and manual dexterity for hand work (engraving, carving, polishing).
  • Highly adept in application of 3D modelling software, knowledge of Carveco (ArtCam), Z-brush and 3DS Max.
  • Understanding of CNC machining.
  • Proficiency in basic mathematic skills (ratios, unit conversions, geometry, trigonometry, graphing) and in measurement principles (accuracy, precision, calibration, measurement error).
  • Good knowledge of lighting and rendering.
  • Good general animation skills.

Requirements

Language Requirements:

  • Proficiency in one official language (English/French) is essential. Bilingual (English and French) is an asset.

Education & Designation:

  • Certificate or degree in Art, Art Design, Digital Media, Animation, Visual Effects or equivalent related field.

Experience:

  • Extensive experience in using 3D modelling software creating animals, realistic scenes and portraits.
  • Minimum 3 years of related industry experience.
  • 2 years experience in modeling in either Carveco (ArtCam), Z-brush or 3DS Max.
  • 2 years experience using Adobe Photo-shop and Illustrator.
  • Experience using V-ray is an asset.

This opening is to be filled on a hybrid working arrangement, and the incumbent will be required to work from the Ottawa location generally on between 3 to 5 days a per week which could change based on operational requirements
