The Mint is hiring an Assayer who can thrive in a dynamic and inclusive environment.
Reporting to the Manager, Assay Operations, the incumbent will carry out sample preparation duties for Au and Ag deposits of rough and fine cast precious metals. Prepare and complete samples for, and perform fusion and cupellation operations in furnace room which includes operation of various equipment (hydraulic press, rolling mills, polishing tables, etc.). Complete acid-parting for fire assay of precious metal samples including gold deposits, sweeps, and similar material; operates electronic microbalance to weigh fire assay samples; prepares bulk parting acid solutions; reports on production activities; participates in training of employees and in continuous improvement initiatives; performing housekeeping tasks.
This opening is to be filled on a continuous operation and/or shift work basis.
Requirements
Language Requirements:
Proficiency in one official language (English/French) is essential.
Education & Designation:
- Bachelor in chemistry, engineering, or relevant sciences.
- Have completed or in the process of completing the British Columbia Fire Assayers (BCIT) Training Courses CHSC 5631 and5632 with a passing grade of at least 75%.
Experience:
- As a minimum, 24 months of fire assay experience would be required in lieu of the aforementioned education and training
- The candidate must demonstrate an understanding of the fundamentals of precision weighing as well as fusion and lead collection of precious metals and cupellation
Additional Qualifications:
Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to work independently, with minimum supervision, to process samples (deposits, sweeps, and similar material) through sample preparation operations, the lead fusion and parting operations of fire assay in an organized and precise fashion and in accordance with detailed assay methods;
- Ability to operate a microbalance for precision-weighing of fire assay samples;
- Ability to work with different units of measure;
- Experienced working with hazardous chemicals;
- Ability to communicate and work in a team environment;
- Ability to interpret and apply safety and technical information;
- Ability to recognize equipment/process malfunctions or hazardous conditions and to initiate appropriate corrective actions;
- Problem-solving; troubleshooting; initiative, judgment; reliability are especially important in this role;
- Skilled in mechanical operation of presses, mills, other metal preparation equipment and techniques such as polishing, to assist in the completion of sample preparation duties;
Knowledge :
- Knowledge of the Mint’s Health & Safety procedures and guidelines;
- Knowledge of the Mint’s Continuous Improvement principles and lean principles;
- Knowledge of quality control principles applying to fire assay;
- Knowledge of fire assay operations including lead fusion, acid-parting and related tasks;
- Knowledge and use of D365/ERP and LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) for purposes of data in-put and fire preparation;
- Basic knowledge and understanding of principles in metallurgy and chemistry of fire assay;
- Basic knowledge of fire assay data and results.
