The Mint is hiring a Manager, Materials Engineering who can thrive in a dynamic and inclusive environment

Reporting to the Director, Operations, Plating, Silver & Quality, the Manager, Materials Engineering provides leadership and technical expertise to support the development, improvement, and optimization of materials, products, and manufacturing processes across the organization. The position ensures engineering resources, technologies, and capabilities are effectively applied to improve product quality, operational performance, manufacturing efficiency, and business outcomes, while supporting technical problem solving, continuous improvement, and the advancement of manufacturing and product technologies. The incumbent is responsible for leading a team of approximately 4 people.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead the Materials Engineering team by establishing priorities, objectives, and performance expectations that support manufacturing operations, business requirements, and corporate strategy.
  • Provide technical leadership and engineering expertise to support the resolution of complex materials, manufacturing, plating, tooling, product, and process-related issues.
  • Identify, evaluate, and implement process and product improvement opportunities that enhance safety, quality, operational reliability, productivity, and cost effectiveness.
  • Support manufacturing operations through the application of engineering principles, materials expertise, and emerging technologies to improve plant performance and operational resilience.
  • Manage engineering and technical projects, including process improvements, equipment upgrades, product enhancements, and technology implementation initiatives.
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including Operations, Commercial teams, suppliers, contractors, and technical partners, to support business objectives and operational needs.
  • Oversee laboratory, testing, and technical evaluation activities to ensure accurate analysis, effective problem solving, and informed engineering decision-making.
  • Provide leadership, coaching, and development opportunities for team members, fostering technical excellence, continuous improvement, collaboration, and knowledge sharing across the organization.

  

This position requires you to work from the Winnipeg location five days per week.

Requirements

Languages

  • English proficiency is essential. Bilingualism is considered an asset

  

Education

  • University degree in mechanical, chemical engineering or related area. A combination of experience and other university degrees can also be considered
  • Professional Engineering designation or technical accreditation is considered an asset

  

Experience

  • Minimum of 7 years of related business experience with strong understanding of materials science, metallurgy, mechanical and or chemical engineering, and manufacturing processes.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive management experience, preferably in a unionized environment
  • Experience with engineering project management, including planning, execution, budgeting, scheduling, and risk management.

  

Additional Qualifications

  • Knowledge of metal finishing, plating technologies, metal forming, tooling, automation, and industrial manufacturing systems.
  • Understanding of continuous improvement methodologies, including Lean Manufacturing, Root Cause Analysis, FMEA, DOE, SPC, and other structured problem-solving techniques.
  • Knowledge of quality management systems, applicable ISO standards, and laboratory testing methods, including metallurgical, mechanical, chemical, and materials characterization techniques.
  • Strong analytical, technical reporting, presentation, and communication skills, with the ability to make data-driven decisions using engineering and statistical methods.
  • Knowledge of health, safety, and environmental regulations and practices applicable to manufacturing and laboratory environments.
  • Proficiency with ERP/business systems (e.g., D365), document control practices, engineering change management processes, technical data management, and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to evaluate and apply new technologies, materials, and manufacturing processes to improve operational performance and support future business requirements.
  • Highly organized, adaptable, and results-oriented, with the ability to manage competing priorities
  • Demonstrated leadership and relationship-building skills, with the ability to inspire high-performing teams and promote a culture of safety, inclusion, and collaboration
