The centrepiece of the resurging Toronto Maple Leafs in the 1990s, Doug Gilmour could seemingly do it all: power plays, penalty killing, defence and offence, and all while playing with heart and an intensity befitting his “Killer” nickname. Already a Stanley Cup® champion, Gilmour’s arrival in January 1992 sparked a dramatic turnaround for the Maple Leafs. In his first full season with Toronto (1992-93), Number 93 set new franchise records for single-season points (127) and assists (95), while his defensiveplay earned him the NHL’s Frank J. Selke Trophy. The team’s back-to-back appearances in the Conference Final (1993, 1994) cemented his status as a fan favourite, and in August 1994, Gilmour became the 15th player to don the “C” for Toronto. A member of the Hockey Hall ofFame since 2011, Doug Gilmour is one of six NHL stars featured in this rectangular tribute to some of the legendary Canadian captains of an Original Six team.
The Original Six™: Toronto Maple Leafs
One of the NHL’s founding teams, the Toronto Maple Leafs are also one of its most storied franchises. The Leafs have won a total of 13 Stanley Cup Championships, including a celebrated win in 1967 that brought the Original Six era to a close. The team is well represented in the Hockey Hall of Fame, where more honoured players have worn the Blue and White than any other colours—including Doug Gilmour, whose post-season play made him one of the most beloved captains in Leafs history.

Design:
A defensive-minded forward with a scoring touch, Doug Gilmour was the centrepiece of the resurgent Toronto Maple Leafs in the 1990s.
Did you know…
- Born in Kingston, Ont., Doug Gilmour was a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs from 1992 to 1997, and served as captain from 1994 to 1997.
- He shares the NHL record for fastest goal after being scored on (2 seconds)!
- Winner of the Frank J. Selke Trophy in 1993, Gilmour became the first Leafs player to win an NHL award since 1967. He also made two consecutive appearances at the NHL’s All-Star Game (1993, 1994).
- Gilmour was on the ice for the last game played at Maple Leaf Gardens — but as a member of the opposing team. Still, the former captain was given a standing ovation during the closing ceremony.
- He returned to play for the Leafs in 2003, but suffered a career-ending injury in his first game.
- In his 20-year career (1983-2003), Gilmour scored 1,414 points (450 goals, 964 assists) in 1,474 games—almost a point per game. He is one of the NHL’s Top 20 all-time scoring leaders, and the Top 10 for all-time playoff points and assists.
