J.M. Coetzee was born in South Africa in 1940. Coetzee’s first Booker Prize was awarded in 1984 for his Life & Times of Michael K. His image on this coin dates to that period. The coin also bears the summary of that book’s moralas it appears in the book’s last paragraph:
“He would lower the spoon down the shaft deep into the earth, and when he brought it up there would be water in the bowl of the spoon; and in that way, he would say, one can live.”
