Coin design: The shield bearing the provincial arms ofthe fourprovinces forming the original Dominion of Canada: Ontario, Quebec,New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. A double date (1912-2012) has beenadded to highlight its centennial year.
Packaging:
Coin is encapsulated and presented in a maroon clamshell case lined with flock and protected by a black sleeve.

But asCanada evolved, so did the needfor a standard national currency,and Confederation in 1867 hastenedthis need still further.
In 1912, the Mint produced the firstdistinctly Canadian gold coins indenominations of five and ten dollars.They featured the word “Canada,”leafy maple branches, and the shieldfrom Canada’s Coat of Arms. Theshort-lived coins disappeared fromcirculation in 1914 when the FirstWorld War prompted citizens andbanks to hold onto this precious metal.
