About

With its innocent, wide-eyed expression and soft features, a young white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) melts the hearts of any who encounter it! The offspring of one of the most widely distributed, large animal species in Canada, thespotted, wobbly-legged fawn is typically born in the spring and is able to stand on its own within minutes of its birth. In its first days, the vulnerable fawn uses its colouring as camouflage to hide from predators while depending on its mother, the doe, fornourishment; it is this touching bond that is lovingly depicted on the reverse of the latest addition to the Royal Canadian Mint's Baby Animal series.
An impressive addition to your nature-, wilderness- or Canadiana-themed collection! Order yours today!

- Sixth in our Baby Animal's series of coins that lovinglydepict baby animals in a natural setting.
- The intricately engraved design is complemented by the use of selective colouring, which recreates the young white-tailed deer's handsome reddish-brown coat under a canopy of bright green maple leaves.
- While engraving adds depth to the reverse design, an added dimension is gained by the positioning of the maple leaves above the mother and child in order to immerse them in a tranquil—and typically Canadian—forest setting.

- Your coin is GST/HST exempt and has a limited mintage worldwide.
About the Design:
Designed by Canadian artist Glen Loates, your coin depicts a young white-tailed deer (fawn) with itsmother (doe) in one of Canada's many forested areas. A three-quarter profile and the use of selective colouring beautifully showcase the fawn's reddish-brown coat, which is marked from its neck down to its tail by hundreds of bright white spots scattered along each side. Its black, pointed nose and eyes give the fawn a tender expression as it moves with increasing steadiness through the forest on long, hooved legs. Finely detailed engraving captures thedoe's features as she stands protectively at the fawn's side, ever attentive to any signs of danger from a predator that may be lurking nearby. Meanwhile, summer's bright sunlight filters through the vibrant, green-coloured canopy of maple leaves and casts shadows along the forest floor, where afallen tree and vegetation add more dimension to the image's engraved setting.
Did you know...
- Deer are capable of reproducing very quickly; in fact, a herd can nearly double its numbers within one good year!
- Fawns typically weigh up to 4 kilograms at birth.
- Twin births are the norm under ideal conditions, although single births are quite common among younger does or after a harsh winter.
- A young fawn found on its own doesn't mean it's been abandoned; while the fawn remains hidden in the vegetation, the doe leaves to feedbut uses her sense of smell to return to her camouflaged offspring, uttering a low "maternal"grunt to draw it out of hiding!
- Does will nurse their young three to four times a day, and for up to four months, providing a densely concentrated milk that has a higher fat content than cow's milk.
- Three subspecies of white-tailed deer are native to Canada where they enjoy a wide range—from Cape Breton to south-central British Columbia, with pockets of deerpopulations found as far north as Great Slave Lake. There in the bushy valleys, parks and forest edges, the energetic young fawn gains strength and even uses child-like play to learn survival skills and behaviours!
