Did you know…
- The Queen Elizabeth rose is a cross between the Charlotte Armstrong hybrid tea rose and the Floradora floribunda rose, and was introduced in 1954.
- It was the first to be classified as a grandiflora rose, a category that was created specifically for it; this class is not universally recognized, meaning that the Queen Elizabeth rose is sometimes classified as a floribunda.
- There is a climbing variety known as Climbing Queen Elizabeth, but it isn't as free-flowering as theQueen Elizabeth.
- An easy-going rose, it continues to be one of the most popularroses in the world due to its lightly scented, long-stemmed blooms that are perfect for cutting!
In Canada, one of the most important qualities any plant can possess is versatility, and the Queen Elizabeth rosehas it in spades. The rose bush can grow to 1.3 metres high, and the pink roses themselves are medium-sized, with clusters of high-centred buds and blooms of 26 to 40 petals. It requires minimal upkeep—just a little pruning and a lot of space—in order to grow strong, making it an excellent addition to any sunny garden. Queen Elizabeth roses are truly hardy yet beautiful—a combination of traits that exemplify Canada itself.
