Design:
This engraved and painted set includes three coins. On the first coin, Fu Xing, god of blessings, gazes to the left, holding a baby and a scroll. The background is accented with images of bats—whose pronunciation sounds like blessings. On the second, Lu Xing, god of prosperity, gazes serenely at the viewer, holding a gold lantern and a jeweled staff. The background also features two stylized stag deer, whose pronunciation sounds like deer. The third coin features Shou Xing, god of longevity. Hesmiles toward the right side of the image, holdinga peach in one hand and a cane in the other, with acrane in the background. The peach and the crane both symbolize longevity.
The San Xing (Three Stars) embody the key elements of a happy life in Chinese tradition: blessings, prosperity, and long life. Traditionally displayed together, Fu Xing, Lu Xing, and Shou Xing were first personified during the Ming Dynasty (14thcentury) but hearken back to a much older tradition of associations with the constellation Shen, the 21st of the 28 lunar mansions of Chinese astronomy. This trio of stars is known as Orion's Belt in the western astronomical tradition.
Did you know…
- Fu Xing is believed to reference a historical governor named Yang Chen whose oratory skills helped the people of a village overcome the harmful whims of the imperial court. For this reason, the god Fu Xing is depicted in the traditional scholar's robe.
- The concept of "blessings" and the word for bat (fu) are homophones in spoken Chinese. The bat has thus become a well-known symbol for "blessings."
- Lu Xing bringsprosperity, influence, and status. The word lu refers to the salary of a government official, and people appeal to Lu Xing when studying for an exam or competing for a job.
- In Chinese, "deer" is lu, a homophone for the Chinese word for"prosperity."
- The god of longevity, ShouXing is depicted as an old man with a bald head and white beard, but a young smiling face. He often holds a crooked peach wood staff in one hand and a peach in the other. The peach is a symbol of immortality and long life in Chinese tradition, and both peaches and Shou Xing feature prominently in Chinese birthday celebrations.
- The crane shown with Shou Xing is also a symbol of long life.
- The San Xing are displayed in many homes and businesses in China and around the world, often alongside a food offering.
- Chinese cultural traditions are characterised by alignments between written characters, astronomicalbodies, homophones (words that sound the samebut mean something different), numbers, historical individuals, and auspicious traits like wealthor good luck.
