Design:
Designed by Canadian artist Margaret Best, your coin pairs a technological first with highly detailed engraving. Theclustered stalks, leaves and flowers of pearl yarrow rise up from the right side of the coin to fill most of the reverse. Bees and flies are key pollinators for this species, and are represented here by the two engraved bees approaching from the left; however, the eye is naturally drawn to the three floral-shaped embellishments that re-create the pom-pom type of flowers. Each one is crafted from mother-of-pearl,which lends itself beautifully to re-creating the snow-white double blooms. The pearl lustre also mimics the sun's illuminating effect, and subtly highlights the layered complexity of the daisy-like petals that have been so carefully sculpted.
Did you know...
- Relatively winter hardy and drought-tolerant, pearl yarrow thrives in both rural and urban soils, and emblazons each setting with showy flowers of pearly white.
- Yarrow belongs to the same family as the daisy (Asteraceae).
- Scientifically known as Achillea, the genus of yarrow is named for the Greek hero Achilles, who recognized the plant's medicinal value byusing its leaves to bandage wounds at the Battle ofTroy; because of this, Greeks still regard it as a symbol of war.
- Some species of Achillea can be rather over invasive—especially the common yarrow (Achillea millefolium).
- Some of the First Nations traditionally used yarrow to treat skin irritations and cuts, headaches, burns and nosebleeds.
Packaging:
Your coin is encapsulated and presented in a Royal Canadian Mint-branded maroon clamshell with a black beautybox.
