Design:
The reverse design by Canadian artist Lisa Thomson-Khan features a stylized floral pattern on the outer ring, while the inner core features a colour portrait ofthe official floral emblem of Yukon, the fireweed (Chamerion angustifolium). The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
"I designed the series to evoke sentiments of antique hand-painted art, with vibrant coloursand bold strokes that are reminiscent of a Victorian style. Inspired by the decorative filigree of fine silver, the ornate decorative border waspurposely designed to complement the flowers, using stylized elements that move and twist across the surface like vines and leaves." Did you know…
- In 1954, Yukon initially adopted the spring-flowering prairie crocus as its official flower, but this species was already Manitoba's emblem. Three years later, the Yukon Territorial Government chose the beloved fireweed as a replacement, and the change was made official in November 1957.
- It was previously classified as Epilobium angustifolium. Its updated genus name, Chamerion, is derived from the Greek words chamai ("dwarf") and nerion ("oleander"), while angustifolium comes from the Latin words angustus ("narrow") and folium ("leaf").
- The fireweed is known as a pioneer species, which are the first plants to return to a burnedor recently cleared area. Each of its spikes can have up to 50 flowers, and just one fireweed plant can produce as many as 80,000 silky-haired seeds.
