Design:
Your coin features a reproduction of a touching Royal portrait of motherhood, one that was taken 70 years ago at Buckingham Palace. The original black-and-white photograph (©Cecil Beaton/Victoria and Albert Museum, London/Londres) is re-created with a colour application over engraved elements, which add textural relief to the image of Her Majesty (then Princess Elizabeth) gazing down at her first-born son, His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, when he was five weeks old (December 1948). Designed by Canadian artist Maurice Gervais, the gold-coloured border consists of maple leaves that represent the connection betweenCanada and the Crown. A scroll banner at the top features a stylized version of St. Edward’s Crown placed between the double dates “1948” and “2018,” to commemorate a Royal birth and 70 years of the dual role of Her Majesty as monarch and matriarch. The reversealso includes the engraved word “CANADA”. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
Did you know…
- His Royal Highness was born in Buckingham Palace’s Belgian Suite on the evening of November 14, 1948,at 9:14 p.m. The room also served as a temporary maternity ward for the birth of the Duke of York in 1960, and the Earl of Wessex in 1964, while the Princess Royal was born at Clarence House in 1950.
- On that momentous day in 1948, the waters of the Trafalgar Square fountains were dyed blue in honour of the Royal birth—as they were nearly 65 years later, in 2013, to mark the birth of Prince George of Cambridge
- Although it is officially celebrated on the second Saturday in June, Her Majesty was delivered by caesarean section on April 21, 1926, at 2:40 a.m. She is the first British monarch in recent history to have been born outside a palace, and Prince George of Cambridge is the first heir to the throne born at a hospital.
- Prior to the birth of His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, it was customary for the British Home Secretary (a high-ranking government official) to attend and witness the birth of those in the line ofsuccession. This centuries-old practice was ended in 1936.
- The photograph reproduced on the coin’s reverse was taken on December 1948 at BuckinghamPalace, when His Royal Highness the Prince of Waleswas just five weeks old.
