'Wrought-iron' gates add an additional layer of history to our 110th anniversary! Order today!
In 1908, the future Royal Canadian Mint was first known as the Ottawa branch of Britain’s RoyalMint. The Canadian facility was originally scheduled to open its doors in January 1907, but it was re-scheduled to November of that year to ensure machinery and staff were in place. By late summer, however, the lack of a perimeter fence caused great concern and led to further delays; with the completion of thefence and guardhouse that still stand today, the official opening took place on January 2, 1908.
In the heart of Ottawa, Ont., an imposing wrought-iron fence guards a fortress-like complex where history is both made and commemorated. In honour of the Royal Canadian Mint’s 110th anniversary, this filigree gate-themed offering pays homage to the heritage building that has borne witness to our historic milestones, along with the wrought-iron gates that have safeguarded it since 1908. The colour-over-engraved design is a familiar sight to anyonewho has visited our castle-like facilities in Ottawa; but your coin’s most striking feature is perhaps the elaborate reproduction of our wrought-iron gates, which have carefully safeguarded our world of coins since the very beginning.
A must-have coin for someone who enjoys the grandeur of the Royal Canadian Mint! Order today!

Design:
The emblematic home of the Royal Canadian Mint has a commandingpresence in your coin’s design by Steve McPhee. Highly detailed engraving adds texture from behind the colour overlay, mimicking the appearance of the heritage building’s sandstone-clad walls, recessed windows, even the coat of arms that preserves history just above the main entrance. Adding to this stately appearance, a filigree gate is affixed to the coin’s rim to re-create the fence and gates that line the site’s perimeter. The “wrought iron” gates arepainted black to resemble their real-life counterparts, which have guarded the entrance to the site since the official opening of the Ottawa branch of the Royal Mint on January 2, 1908. The reverse includes the engraved word “CANADA” and the commemorative dates “1908-2018”. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
Did you know…
- When Governor General Earl Grey first activated the presses during the opening ceremony, a 50-cent pieceearned the distinction of being the very first domestically produced coin. Technically, a token was thefirst item we ever struck, but only as a trial run: “Ottawa Mint Trial Run” was engraved on one side of the plain tokens, and “November 1907” on the other.
- In 1931, the Ottawa branch (including the property and building featured on the reverse) wasofficially transferred to the federal government and became a wholly Canadian institution: the Royal Canadian Mint. Just a few years later, in 1937, our first “all-Canadian” coins went into circulation, featuring well-known designs such asthe beaver and caribou, still in use today. .
- Throughout our 110-year history, we’ve coined Canada’s narrative and celebrated our nation’s achievements, and we’re proud of our international reputation for craftsmanship, artistry and innovation. Among our notable “firsts” and milestones are the world’s first coloured circulation coin and the firstglow-in-the-dark piece; our spirit of innovation has also taken us to new heights with a record-settingmillion dollar coin, and new world standards for gold and silver purity.
