Design:
Designed by Canadian artist Arnold Nogy presents a portrait of a common loon (Gavia immer) on a Canadian lake, where selective colour adds a beautiful vibrancy to the aquatic plants. Spreading its wings, the loon rises high up on the surface of the water with neck outstretched, which provides an unfettered view of its strikingly patterned plumage. As the loon prepares to take flight, the engraved ripples mimic the lake’s reflective surface on a sunny summer day.
Did you know…
- The common loon is a beloved summer resident of every Canadian province and territory—infact, Canada provides the breeding grounds for 95% of the world’s population!
- Calm winds make it more challenging for a common loon to take flight; without a good breeze, theloon has to run much farther to gain enough speed for take-off.
- A loon is able to fly at an average speed of 120 km/h, and generally follows a direct flight path to its destination.
- Like the image on the coin’s reverse, a loon also rises up and flaps its wings after a good preening session! This daily maintenance is necessary to keep each feather properly aligned and in good condition—in fact, the loss of just a few feathers can dramatically impede the loon’s flight ability.
- A body shake or wing flap is also a type of stretch movement. In addition, both young and adults will extend or stretch one leg above the water.
