About
Corn Moon teaches us to be mindful of the never-ending cycle of life! Order today!
Corn Moon blesses us with a bounty of food, and teaches us to be mindful of the never-ending cycle of life. It’s the ninth teaching from Grandmother Moon in Anishinaabe tradition that views the moon as a living relation who makes 13 appearances throughout the year to watch over Mother Earth’schildren and light their paths with her gentle wisdom. In September, the corn is ready to be harvested, and as we remove the husks, we uncover 13 rows of multi-coloured kernels. These seeds represent all thespirits that are waiting to begin their walk on Earth. Corn Moon reminds us that every decision and action must be made with future generations in mind. Itis our responsibility to preserve and prepare this world for all our relations that are yet to come.

Design:
Algonquin artist Frank Polson has created a captivating imageof a full moon filling the sky as it sits low on the horizon behind a tree that is beginning to transform into the vibrant colours of autumn. A corn stalk stands to the left, its leaves, tassels and corn seemingly reaching for the sky. Dashes of vivid green reflect the inner world of the leaves as they capturesunlight and perform the hidden process of photosynthesis. The ear of corn and its silks are portrayed in the fiery colours of autumn, the husk removed to reveal rows of plump kernels and golden silky threads.
Did you know…
- Corn plays an important mythological and cultural role among the Anishinaabe. It is honoured in various corn ceremonies that are performed in spring and autumn, and is the central character in numerous legends. Some stories speak of Mandaamin, a corn spirit who becomes the father of mankind. The name Mandaamin literally translates to “corn.”
- The history of farming among North America’s Indigenous peoples shows great sophistication; crop rotation, fertilization, and companion planting such as the Three Sisters (corn, squash and beans). The cornprovides support for the beans, and a windbreak forthe squash. Beans produce nitrogen for the corn while the prickly squash deters wildlife and keeps roots cool.
