Design:
Canadian artist Cathy Bursey-Sabourin has created an originalwoodcut design of a humpback whale and northern gannet. The whale is diving after having surfaced for air, while the northern gannet is plunging into thewater for fish. One of the coast's most distinctive rock formations towers in the background, carved by wind and the world's highest tides. Thewhale's nose and the bird's beak are pointing downward towards the left side of the coin, like waves that roll in from the Atlantic and crash onto Canada's eastern shores.

Did you know…
- The world's highest tides occur in Canada's Bay of Fundy where water rushes into the funnel-shaped bay with a force of 8,000 locomotives. The upper part of the bay is increasingly narrow and shallow, and this forces the water higher onto the shores. Tides here range from 3.5 to 16 m—compare that to the global average of 1 m!
 - The world's largest gathering of humpback whales is found in Newfoundland and Labrador. Many migrate there for summer (June to September)while some remain in the deep bays throughout winter. Humpbacks range from 12 to 16 m in length, and have the longest pectoral fins in the world—over 4 mlong!
 - The northern gannet summers on six islands and capes in Newfoundland and the Gulf of St. Lawrence, nesting so densely the sites look snow-covered. Itcatches fish with spectacular dives, plunging from 30 m in the air to depths of 22 m. Air cells in itsbody cushion the impact, and its beak has no nostrils and is virtually watertight.
 - Woodcut art dates back to ancient Asia and was originally used to stamp patterns onto textiles before being used to print paper. Its thick lines are due to the challenges of scraping the wood out of the block, and how thin lines could easily break under pressure. This printing technique spread to Europeby the 15th century.
