SECOND COIN! A heart-warming take on the shy fox! Order today!
One of Canada’s most common mammals, the fox’s true character is a far cry from the trickster of fairy tales and fables. It is timid, secretive and quite nervous by nature. When survival isn’t at stake, the fox can finally relax. And when it does, its displays of affection are thoseof a peaceful, social creature that loves to groom, play and cuddle as much as its domesticated relative, “man’s best friend.” From a parent’s love to a bonding pair, our Canadian Fauna series is a continuing look at how Canada’s wildlife shows affection in the most familiar (and adorable) ways! The second coin in the series travels to central Canada to catch a glimpse of affectionate foxes cuddling beneath a sunset sky.

Did you know…
- An opportunistic feeder, the fox uses its sight, smell and hearing to hunt. It can easily pick up the scent of a hidden nest, and it can even hear the twitch of a rabbit’s ear! In the past, it wasreviled as a “chicken thief,” but the fox has built up goodwill with farmers who value its appetite for crop-busting rodents and insects.
- It doesn’t live in a hierarchal pack like the wolf or dog. Instead, the fox may opt to live in a small, tight-knit group, but it almost always hunts alone. It doesn’t “woof” like a dog, either; its many calls include a high-pitched warning bark, a nighttime howl, a baby-like cry and a chuckling sound (gekker) made whenever the fox is excited or nervous.
- Canada is home to four fox species, including the red (or coloured) fox featured on this coin. Vulpes vulpes isn’t universally red coloured (there are several different colour variations), but it is found all across Canada, except for coastal British Columbia and parts of the Arctic Archipelago.
- A male adult fox is a “dog” or “reynard,” while the female is a “vixen.”
- A (near) Canada-wide species. Features the red fox, an animal found all across Canada, save for coastal B.C. and parts of the Arctic Archipelago.
