- AN EXCITING NEW CANVAS FOR CANADIAN ARTIST JAYSON FUERSTENBERG! Fuerstenberg is known for his “magic realism.” His style is anchored in reality, but he adds mystery or fantastical elements to tell a story or reveal a deeper meaning. This is Fuerstenberg’s first coin with the Mint. He interpreted the Arctic fox as an integral part of the landscape, not just one of its inhabitants.
- A MASTERPIECE OF ENGRAVING! Your coin’s innovative double imagery pushes the envelope of engraving as the sculptor carves a landscape within the fox’s silhouette. The landscape is a projection of the animal’s inner nature. It is not a tangible element within the scene, yet must be immediately recognized asa part of the Arctic fox, like its thick winter furand long tail.
- A SHOWPIECE! Reverse gold platingdelivers the shimmering luxury of gold. This is thesecond 5-oz silver coin to be enhanced with this effect (the first is the Grizzly Bear, first coin in this Inner Nature series). It’s an upscale feature that heightens the prestige of your stunning work of art.
- INCLUDES SERIALIZED CERTIFICATE! The Royal Canadian Mint certifiesall of its collector coins.
- LOW MINTAGE! Limited to 750 coins worldwide.
- 5 OZ. PURE SILVER! Your coin is crafted from five ounces 99.99% pure silver and includes reverse gold plating.

Design:
Designed by Canadian artist Jayson Fuerstenberg, your coin features an Arctic fox poised on a background of gold-plated snow. The fox’s compact ears and muzzle are clearly distinguishable in its ¾ profile. Its distinctive long tail warms its legs. An Arctic landscape is engraved within the fox’s silhouette. It features snow-covered tundra, mountains, and a North American brown lemming, the fox’s preferred prey. “CANADA 2019 50 DOLLARS” appears to the right of the fox’s back. Its engraving follows the contours of the drifting snow. On the obverse, the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt with “ELIZABETH II D.G. REGINA” is engraved along the outer edge of your coin.
"My artistic style is 'magic realism.' It's anchored in reality, but I add mystery or fantastical elements to tell a story or reveal a deeper meaning. The Arctic fox was perfect for my first coin with the Mint. It's part of the landscape, like the snow and ice, as it travels greatdistances in search of lemmings, its primary food.” Jayson Fuerstenberg, Fine Artist
“The challenge is creating the landscape as a projection. It is not tangible like thefox, yet has to be recognizable without overpowering the main subject. Creating such a subtle effect bycutting lines into metal is very different from gradually building up an illustration.” Steven Stewart, Engraver
Did you know…
- Canadian artist Jayson Fuerstenberg uses countless pencils in his art. He gradually builds up the layers in his drawings to create a textured look. Such layers were critical to creating the ethereal quality ofthe Arctic fox’s inner nature.
- Engraver Steven Stewart faced an unprecedented task as he interpreted the artist’s 2D design as a 3D sculpture. The challenge: how to convey the landscape as aprojection. It is the fox’s inner nature, and is intangible and translucent. Shading with pencil is very different from cutting lines into metal.Stewart’s skill and his creative use of frostings produced impressive results—right down to the lemming!
