Since its creation in 1963, Her Majesty’s sapphire tiara has been occasionally referred to as the Victorian Sapphire Tiara or the George VI Sapphire Tiara—areference to the Victorian-era sapphire pieces given to Her Majesty as a wedding gift in 1947. The Sapphire Suite originally consisted of a sapphire-and-diamond necklace and pendant earrings that are among Her Majesty’s favourite sapphire jewels. The addition of this tiara helped round out the assembled parure; it was created from a 19th-century sapphire necklace that once belonged to Princess Louise of Belgium (1858-1924).

Her Majesty has a long association with sapphires, from the Prince Albert sapphire brooch to the George VI Victorian suite that inspired this tiara. In fact, Her Majesty wore the sapphire parure (without the tiara) in an official portrait commemorating theSapphire Jubilee in 2017.
