The face of the Boston Bruins for two decades, Raymond Bourque remains the NHL’s most prolific scoring defenceman of all time. This tough, hard-playing blueliner could kick-start his team’soffence and shut down some of the league’s top scorers, all while embodying the hard work, skill and stamina that defined the team he captained from 1985 to 2000. In his first season with Boston (1979-1980), Bourque’s 65 points earned him the Calder Trophy and the honour of being named to the NHL’s First All-Star Team—the first of 19 All-Star honours in his 21-season career. The five-time Norris Trophy winner became co-captain of “The Black and Gold” in 1985 and the sole captain in 1988; known for his shooting accuracy and consistency of play, he rarely missed more than 10 games a season on his way to becoming the topscorer in Bruins history, and an all-time NHL leader in goals (410) and points (1,579) by a defenceman.A member of the Hockey Hall of Fame since 2004, RayBourque is the sole blueliner featured in this rectangular tribute to some of the legendary Canadian captains of an NHL® Original Six team.
The Original Six™: Boston Bruins
The oldest American team in the NHL, the Boston Bruins have won the Stanley Cup® six times since their NHL debut in 1924. Much of Boston’s success preceded and followed theOriginal Six era, when they had just four winning seasons between 1947 and 1967. Emerging as a powerhouse in the late 1960s and 1970s, the Bruins remained fiercely competitive during the 1980s on the strength of the team’s defence, and Boston still holds the record for most consecutive post-season appearances: 29 in a row, from the 1967-68 season to 1995-96.
