For 19 seasons, Steve Yzerman was “The Captain” in Detroit, where his retired jersey forever bears the “C”. • A fan favourite, Steve Yzerman was born in Cranbrook,B.C. and grew up in Ottawa (Nepean), Ont.
• Drafted 4th overall by Detroit in the 1983 NHL Entry Draft, he is one of the few who spent their entire NHL playing career with one team.
• Halfway into his rookie season (1983-1984), he became the youngest player to play in an NHL All-Star Game.
• Yzerman became the youngest team leader in Red Wings historywhen, at the age of 21, he was named captain at thestart of his third season with Detroit (1986-87).
