For 19 seasons, Steve Yzerman was “The Captain” in Detroit, where his retired jersey forever bears the “C”. He was the longest-serving captain in NHL history and the linchpin of the Detroit Red Wings’ resurgencein the 1990s—a dedicated team player whose leadership by example secured his place among the legends ofthe game. Known for his determination, “Stevie Y” emerged as one of the league’s top-scoring players early on by breaking team records in his rookie season and consistently averaging over 100 points per season between 1987 and 1993. The ten-time NHL All-Star gained greater recognition as a two-way forward after the Red Wings adopted a “defence first” style of play, which led to three Stanley Cup® wins (1997, 1998, 2002) and the Conn Smythe Trophy for Yzerman in 1998. A member of the Hockey Hall of Fame since 2009, Steve Yzerman is one of six NHL stars featured in this rectangular tributeto some of the legendary Canadian captains of an Original Six team.
The Original Six™: Detroit Red Wings
Since joining the NHL in 1926, the Detroit Red Wings have won 11 Stanley Cup championships. They were a dynasty during the Original Six era, with seven consecutive first-place finishes and four Stanley Cup wins between 1949 and 1955. The team’s appearance in the 1966 Final would be their last for nearly three decades, but on June 7, 1997, team captain Steve Yzerman became the first Red Wings player in 42 years to hoist the Cup at centre ice.
