Design:
The reverse is an engraved rendition of Summertime Polar Bear by Canadian wildlife artist Robert Bateman. Beneath the text "CANADA 2020", Ursus maritimus is shown resting on the rocky shores of Hudson Bay. The denomination of "2500 DOLLLARS" and an engraved reproduction of the artist's signature are both positioned to the right of the wildlife portrait. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
"Summer in the arctic is wonderful. The days are long, and the plants and animals almost seem to be rushing to accomplish their activities beforethe coming of winter. After the long, dark winter out on the sea ice, the polar bears are able to comeinland and enjoy a more varied diet. The winter food is almost entirely seals, but summertime brings small mammals, birds and eggs as well as a variety of plant life. It is an easy time for the bears. In this painting I have tried to show the pleasant and relaxed mood of the bears' life in summer. They still spend most of their time in coastal areas. Hudson Bay is in the background with its pack ice. The ice drifts around most of the summer. A few of the sparse grasses and flowers poke up from the sheltered cracks in the rocks. They are far less luxuriant than they would be a mile or two inland. Wind oppression is the dominating factor. As most people know, polar bears are not pure white. I have tried toportray his coat as rich and glossy, with a gentlegolden glow." Robert Bateman: Artist
