About
Protecting Canada’s oceans: A celebration of the waters that connect us all.
When we protect the health of our oceans, we’re protecting our future.
Celebrate the fragile beauty of our marine environments with this conservation-themed coin! On its reverse, several engraved species surround a ship porthole that offers you a view of cold-water corals and sponges. The underwater scene is a view of some of the marine wonders that have directly benefitted from Canada’s commitment to healthier oceans.
Special features
- Celebrate Canada’s oceans: Celebrate Canada’s oceans and some of its marine wonders with this 1 oz. fine silver coin. Its design speaks to the importance of protecting our oceans now for the generations to come.
- A message about conservation: The marine species and habitats on the reverse are among those that have been positively impacted by Canada’s marine conservation efforts.
- Symbolically coloured: The habitat at the centre of the design is coloured to highlight the amazing diversity of marine life off Canada’s coasts. It’s a portrait of a healthy ocean habitat – that’s what we’re trying to protect.
- Finely engraved: The inner circle is engraved to resemble a ship porthole, which offers a view of an underwater habitat… except the engraved marine species are on the other side of the window! By taking the species out of the ocean, the design gives a sense of what’s at risk: their survival.

Design & Artist
Designed by artist W. Allan Hancock, the reverse features an inner circle shaped like a ship porthole, which affords a colourful underwater view of Canada’s oceans. The healthy underwater habitat is populated by cold-water corals and sponges. Engraved around the porthole are five marine species that have benefited from Canada’s conservation and management efforts today (clockwise from top): northern bottlenose whale, leatherback turtle, Atlantic lobster, narwhal and rockfish.
The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
