Design:
The reverse is a modern-day version of the Louis XIV 15-sol coin issued in 1670 for exclusive use in the French colonies in North America. The design features the Royal arms of France (a shield with three fleurs-de-lis) ensigned by the royal crown, and the Latin legend "GLORIAM REGNI TVI DICENT" ("They shall speak of the glory of Thy Kingdom"). For historical accuracy, the reverse includes the original "A" (Paris Mint) mint mark beneath the shield and, in the 12 o'clock position, a rook (castle)mark representing Chief Engraver Jean-Baptiste Dufour, who engraved the original reverse. The obversefeatures the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.

• In 1670, King Louis XIV sought to remedy colonial coin shortages by issuing silver pieces in two denominations, 5 sols and 15 sols, and a copper 2 deniers coin. These were designed to be used exclusively in the French colonies in North America – Canada, Acadia, Louisiana and Placentia (Newfoundland) – and could not be circulated in France.
• But with no value outside the colony, the coinage of 1670 was unpopular with the merchants of New France, whocould not use them to pay taxes or purchase European goods. The value was later raised by 1/3 to boostcirculation but none were used after 1680.
• With only 17 examples known (and at least eight are in institutional collections), the Louis XIV 15-sol coin isnow regarded as one of the rarest and most valuablecoins in Canadian history.
