Design:
This coin has been specifically designed for consistent weight while also ensuring that the subject remains unaltered from the original in detail andproportions. From Brent Townsend's 1996 2-dollar circulation coin reverse, a stylized adult polar bear stands on an ice floe, gazing out over the early summer Arctic landscape. The image is portrayedwithin its own silhouette. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.

- Shortly after the 2-dollar coin's launch, the polar bear on its reverse was dubbed "Churchill"—to the delight of residents of Churchill, Manitoba, where polar bears are a common sight.
 - When the Royal Canadian Mint announced that it would be producing a 2-dollar coin in 1996, the public sent inapproximately 19,000 unsolicited suggestions for areverse design!
