About
$100 Gold Coin - 10th Anniversary of Nunavut (2009)
Cherishing the land, preserving the cultureIn the Inuit language (Inuktitut), "Nunavut" means "our land."To Inuit, land is not something that is controlled or owned. Itis a relationship—like an unbreakable bond between anewborn and its mother.
For thousands of years, Inuit and their ancestors lived asnomads, eternally linked to the rhythm of the land and theseasons, moving from place to place as they followed themigratory patterns of caribou, seals, fish and birds. Theirrelationship with the land and wildlife around them becamethe very essence of their culture.
Contact with European explorers dramatically altered this wayof life. Yet, after hundreds of years of change, thecontemporary members of this ancient people came togetherto reclaim their past and preserve it for the future. In 1973, they began a study to demonstrate the extent of Inuitaboriginal title in the Arctic; the basis of their land claim thatwould follow. Twenty-five years later, the Nunavut Act wasadopted and received Royal Assent on July 9, 1998. Then, onApril 1, 1999, people coast to coast celebrated Canada'syoungest territory as Nunavut officially joined the federationof Canada.
No doubt, the Inuit celebrated the event with many a drumdance; a ritual that is as much a part of their cultural fabricas the land that surrounds them. The drum dance recountspeople's experiences; tells stories and dreams; preservesancestral wisdom and values. It is a living bond betweenthose who have walked before us—and those who are yet tocome.
