About
$20 Fine Silver Coin – The Royal Hudson (2008)
Fit for a king and queen, the 2850, a Hudson-type 4-6-4 (four leading wheels, six driving wheels and four trailing wheels) locomotive was built by Canadian Pacific in 1938, and featured a distinctive semi-streamline design.
During their 1939 royal visit, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth travelled from Quebec City to Vancouver aboard the 2850. To mark the occasion, the engine was fitted with a stainless steel boiler jacket and painted silver and royal blue. It had royal crests on the front and tender sides and royal crowns on theside running boards. In fact, the eye-catching locomotive drew almost as much attention as the royals!
The 2850 set a North American record when it completed the 4,921 km (3,061 mi) royal tour without a change oflocomotive. In tribute, all 4-6-4 semi-streamlined locomotives were fitted with royal crowns and were named Royal Hudsons.
Highlights
